Weekly ATM value and volume figures 1 November 2020.

Key observations for week ending 1 November:

  • Sunday saw a ‘dash for cash‘ equating to an 18% increase to £174m in the value of cash taken from LINK ATMs when compared to the previous Sunday.
  • Monday was the busiest Monday for ATMs since March with £238m dispensed.
  • Even with Sunday’s dash for cash the volume of ATM transactions was the third lowest across the last 12 weeks with 30.8 million transactions.
  • ATM volumes reduced last week by a further 1%, a 38% reduction compared to 2019.
  • Cash withdrawn from ATM’s last week has remained at a reduction of 30% compared to 2019.

Sunday’s dash for cash

After the announcement of a second lockdown in England on Sunday (1st November) the UK saw a dash for cash with an 18% increase to £174m in the value of cash taken from LINK ATMs when compared to the previous Sunday.

Repeated on Monday

The dash for cash before Thursday’s lockdown continued on Monday (2 November) with the busiest Monday for ATMs since March with £238m dispensed.

Even with Sunday’s dash for cash the volume of ATM transactions was the third lowest across the last 12 weeks – 30.8 million transactions (49.8 million in the equivalent week in 2019).

The above graph demonstrates that post Lockdown 1.0 the weekly volume of ATM transaction rose from a low point of 20 million to a static circa 30 million – it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Lockdown 2.0 and the traditional seasonal end of year impact of a temporary dip of circa 10 million transactions a week.

Monthly LINK ATM transaction volumes for October were 138million. After a partial post Lockdown 1.0 recovery volumes have now been static over the last four months.
